SCHOOL MUM CLIQUES

I shared the following Sunday paper snippet on Twitter yesterday. It wasn’t difficult to determine the shoes in question were Saltwater sandals; shoes I bought on impulse and have worn a total of three times. The inferior cost per wear ratio has kept me from purchasing this season’s sandal – the Birkenstock. Yes, apparently they’re back and if money were no object I’d go and buy a black pair and probably only wear them twice.

The ensuing conversation on social media about middle-class school mum’s choice of footwear had me thinking about school mum cliques. Or rather, the lack thereof.

The years preceding my son starting school, I lived in fear of “the drop-off”. I possibly read too many inane articles and blog posts dissecting the behaviour of the dreaded school-yard mum – early bird mothers, gym-wearing yummy mummies, alpha mums, PTA mums. I’ll let you in on a little secret.

NO ONE CARES!!!

In the interests of research, I went hunting for articles about the different types of school mums. Once I had plucked out my eyeballs with a fork, I realised the same people exist everywhere.

At the school gate, much like in life, there are people wearing clothes. Some of these clothes will not look the same. Some of these clothes might. Some people will be wearing gym clothes because they are going to the gym. Running on a treadmill in ballet flats is really hard.

Some people will be friendly. Some people will be jerks. This does not relate to the type of clothes you wear, your gender or the fact you spat out a baby.

Some parents will gravitate towards the people they “get”. Some people call this a clique.

If you want to turn up early because you look forward to chatting with your friends, go for it. If you wish to wait in your car, why not. Wear trackie pants, wear heels, work, don’t work – just don’t buy into the bullshit. Say no to school mum stereotyping. Who knows, you might even make a new friend.

Do you buy into the school mum stuff?
